VARIOUS ARTISTS= Punk Seven Inch CD, Volume 1 (Link Update!!)

This CD collects the first batch of seven-inch EP's put out by Lookout! Records but there are a few absences. The first is Operation Ivy's "Hectic" EP, Lookout! number 3. You'll find that in its entirety on the CD version of Operation Ivy's "Energy" album. The second is Crimpshrine's first EP "Sleep, What's That?" which is available as a part of their CD album "The Sound Of A New World Being Born." Both of these titles are on Lookout". Next is Lookout! number 8, Sewer Trout's "Songs About Drinking" EP. The songs from that record were released on a Sewer Trout discography CD but I don't have a copy or any advice about how to track it down - but it's definitely worth looking for if you're interested. Also not inlcluded on this CD are seven inches by Neurosis and Eyeball, Lookout! numbers 12 and 13 respectively.
On this CD there are no credits because the credits for each original release are included in the artwork in this booklet. In all cases, we reproduced the best possible version of the cover and insert art, manipulated only to make them fit in a CD-sized booklet. Be aware that the band addresses on the original artwork are 15 years old in most cases, and may not be good anymore.
John Golden mastered this CD from the original tapes. He mastered all of the EP's originally too, back when he was at K-Disc. K-Disc Mastering is now gone but John has his own mastering business. All the original layout was done dy David Hayes. He co-founded Lookout! Records with Lawrence Livermore. These days, David runs Very Small Records. Chris Appelgren did the CD construction and tracked down the tapes, artwork and bands with help from Alicia Peterson and the rest of the Lookout! Records staff. If you were in one of these bands, get in touch with Lookout! Records

THE DUDOOS = ('2003, Kogidaso! Shura-Shu-Shun!)

Not as bubblegummy and cartoony as Shonen Knife or the 5.6.7.8's (although they favor a similar taste for ramalama pop-punk melodies and shouted-chanted vocals), and not nearly as noisy as the Boredoms or Jojo Hiroshige's projects (although they don't shy away from the feedback), the Dudoos are closer to Japan's answer to the Rezillos or mid-'90s indie scensters Bis. Kogidaso: Shura Shu Shun is fun but never completely silly, with enough punk grit and muscle to keep their more sugary moments from becoming gag-worthy. These 11 brief songs -- only three of them even break the 2:30 mark -- have enough melodic strength and punky vigor to enchant even those who don't understand a word of Japanese, with choruses as catchy as the best Undertones songs and a palpable sense of fun. Kogidaso: Shura Shu Shun is highly recommended for anyone who likes their punk rock on the candied side.{Stewart Mason}

SLAUGHTER AND THE DOGS = ('1978, Live Slaughter Rabid Dogs)

Formed during the initial onslaught of U.K. punk in 1976, Manchester's Slaughter and the Dogs were the first group to release a single (the overlooked classic "Cranked Up Really High") on trailblazing hometown independent label Rabid Records. The group's lineup consisted of vocalist Wayne Barrett, guitarist Mick Rossi, bassist Howard Bates, and drummer Mad Muffet. Gigs at the noted London punk mecca the Roxy Club led to the band's inclusion in filmmaker Don Letts' documentary of that scene, and they eventually received a contract from Decca Records. Further top-notch singles followed in "Where Have All the Bootboys Gone" and "You're Ready Now," and they recorded their debut album, Do It Dog Style, in 1978. However, disagreements with Decca and the departure of vocalist Barrett, a key to the group's sound, combined to sabotage a promising career. Guitarist Billy Duffy was added, and future Smiths leader Morrissey was briefly considered as a vocalist before the group decided to continue with Rossi singing. This arrangement lasted only briefly, though, and Rossi, Bates, and Duffy re-christened themselves first Slaughter and then the Studio Sweethearts. After this unit's breakup in the summer of 1979, there was a Slaughter reunion late in the year with Barrett making a token appearance before being replaced by former Nosebleeds singer Ed Banger (born Eddie Garrity). This aggregation released the album Bite Back in 1980 to no avail and broke up permanently in 1981. Duffy went on to co-found Theatre of Hate and later found success in the Cult.

THE SAINTS= ('98, Everybody Knows The Monkey )

Singer/songwriter Chris Bailey still can't escape the outpouring awe everyone has for the first three Saints LPs (two punk stunners, and the best Stax R&B-punk LP ever), from when he teamed with the also-awesome Ed Kuepper and the band was Australia's Sex Pistols/Ramones. He may even be alluding to his distaste for ceaseless historical curiosity on Everybody Knows the Monkey's opener, "What Do You Want." Whatever, the tremendously talented Bailey has made a string of superb LPs since, only two of which, 1989's Prodigal Son and 1990's solo Demons, fell flat to all but devotees. And what a creative, great career it has been! From the flawless strings'n'horns majesty of his twin post-Kuepper Saints masterpieces, 1984's A Little Madness to Be Free and 1986's All Fools Day, to the languidly lush folk-rock of early-'90s solo LPs Savage Entertainment and 54 Days at Sea, Bailey has never lacked for inspired backing tracks and tunes for his beefy, still marvelous, post-blues snarl/bellow. His pipes still scream rock & roll. And now, having decided on 1996's Howling to assemble a third Saints and try basic rock & roll again, Bailey still has it in spades in his forties. Just as Howling reminded of the schizophrenic, paranoid 1982 killer Casablanca (aka Out in the Jungle...), this more primal, Stones/Easybeats/Wilson Pickett rawk'n'soul, dirty-bar-band sound hearkens back too, only even further, to 1980's The Monkey Puzzle (the title suggests the new Monkey may be a sequel of sorts). Everybody's tracks take a while to register, but they mostly succeed thanks to Bailey's unmitigated fire and still-pronounced hooks/arrangements. He's always been a first-rate lyricist, flitting from smug but stinging, cerebral cynicism to wide-open, vulnerable, meet-your-maker philosophizing. But it's that one-of-a-kind, hunkering, huge voice and garage background that dominate his LPs. Even on the lesser songs here, his uncommon talent still rises. And on the gems like "Everything Turns Sour," "Playboy," and "S+M+M's," Bailey assumes the mantle of still-living treasure. Follow him where'e'r he goes.~~ Jack Rabid

THE GONADS+ (('94, Punk Rock Will Never Die, The Best of The Gonads ))

Legendary punk/oi titans THE GONADS are back with another red-hot testimony to the gutsy spirit of South London hooligan rock and roll. ‘Glorious Bastards’ is 18 tracks of filth and fury, released by Contra Records in Germany. It mixes protest (‘Oily Rag’, ‘Ian Tomlinson’, ‘Fat Cat Splat’) with pure punk anthems (‘Noise Bastards’, ‘Spring-Heel’d Jack’), respect (‘Billy McFadzean'), sauce (‘Badly Done’, ‘Reinfected’) and street culture (‘Charlton Boys’).
Punk, oi, oi-tone, oi-core... call us what you will, THE GONADS have been kicking against the pricks since 1977, with a back catalogue of classic songs including ‘Jobs Not Jails’, ‘Tucker’s Ruckers’, ‘TNT’, 'The Joys Of Oi', ‘I Lost My Love (To A UK Sub’), ‘Alconaut’, ‘Oi, Mate’ and ‘Punk Rock Will Never Die.’
We were street-punk before the term was invented, helping to launch the ‘real punk’ movement that was oi – a howl of rage from the terraces, back streets and council estates of the UK that found an echo around the world. Oi! ain’t about posing and preening. It’s about who we are: the English working class, having a laugh and having a say. The GONADS hate snobbery, ignorance, apathy, bigotry and PC bores. We support unity across our scenes. As our friend Garry Johnson said, back in 1981: “United is the thing to be, think how strong we can be, united against society.”

THE SAINTS= (('96, Howling ))

With their unceremonious ejection from the EMI gravy train at the end of the 70's, it seemed that The Saints were finished. Relieved to be ditching such troublesome clients, EMI overlooked what The Saints had left them; Prehistoric Sounds, a criminally neglected R'n'B masterpiece - maybe the most gorgeous suicide note a band ever left. The album was as uncompromised (and therefore doomed) as most other great cult albums, but it contained the seeds of songwriting that strongly contradicted the premature demise of The Saints.

ONE TIME ANGELS= (('01, Sound Of A Restless City ))

Formed in the late '90s in San Francisco, CA, by Johnny Cruz (drums), Dong Sangalang (guitar, vocals), Mickey Dunegan (bass), the One Time Angels combine the energy of punk-pop tunes with the power and frenzy of heavy rock. After a period of time during which they played numerous live shows, the team entered the studio to record its debut disc alongside guitarist Scotty Hay. Sound of a Restless City, the crew's first album, showed up in 2000, enjoying a considerable notoriety within the local music scene. Following the release of the album, Hay became a full-time member of the team, therefore outlining the Angels as a quartet. Performing on the same stage as the International Noise Conspiracy or Rocket From the Crypt, the Angels solidified their cult status and gained even wider recognition. In 2001, one year after the release of their first disc, the band offered the EP Tricks and Dreams via the Lookout records label, confirming their inflamed sound accomplishments.-- Mario Mesquita
