TV Smith & The Bored Teenagers (2007) Crossing The Red Sea with The Adverts

Even aging punk rockers are entitled to the occasional burst of nostalgia over the good old days, and in the spring of 2007, TV Smith, former leader of the Adverts, offered a handful of fans at London's 100 Club a look back at his salad days by tearing through the songs from the Adverts' classic debut Crossing the Red Sea with the Adverts with the help of his Spanish backing band, the Bored Teenagers. While the Adverts never enjoyed the same degree of media attention as such first-generation U.K. punks as the Sex Pistols, the Damned, the Clash, or the Buzzcocks, time has been more than kind to Crossing the Red Sea; Smith's songs blended the youthful piss and vinegar of the best early punk with an uncommon degree of intelligence and a willingness to explore what might happen when punk went dry as a fad and would be subsumed by the mainstream of rock music, something few of his peers dared to ponder. Smith's songs still communicate nearly 30 years on, but if anything, the Bored Teenagers sound even less subtle than the Adverts, at least on this evening in 2007. Smith can still rant powerfully, and his musicians bash through the songs as if they're afraid they'll be thought of as museum pieces. They didn't need to fret -- this music still sounds raw and vital, and "One Chord Wonders," "Bombsite Boy," and "The Great British Mistake" are as relevant today as when they were recorded in 1978, while the five-song encore closes with a new tune, "Good Times Are Back," that shows Smith hasn't lost his touch. This live disc is no substitute for the Adverts' 1978 Crossing the Red Sea (which is still awaiting a proper United States release, truly a scandalous state of affairs), but Smith and his partners leave no doubt that this album matters as much as ever, and the raw fury of these performances give this disc a genuine reason to be. ~~ Mark Deming

Peter & The Test Tube Babies (1991) Cringe

Peter And The Test Tube Babies are a Punk Rock band that was formed in the small town of Peacehaven, England in 1978 by Del Strangefish and Peter Bywaters. Due to their humorous tongue-in-cheek lyrics, they have been considered part of the Punk Pathetique subgenre. Peter And The Test Tube Babies were first featured in Sounds magazine in July 1980, and after a John Peel Radio One session, made their vinyl debut on the Brighton compilation album Vaultage 78. They played at festivals including the 11th Antifest in 2005. They also had two songs on the Oi! compilation Oi! the Album in that same year. They favoured absurd lyrics and strange titles, such as "The Queen Gives Good Blow Jobs". In 1982, they covered the chart-topping Gary Glitter hit "I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am)" on their album Pissed and Proud.

Meat Puppets (1987) Mirage

As many Meat Puppets fans had realized by 1987's Mirage, the trio would change gears and broaden their sound with each successive album. This was never more apparent than on their fourth full-length release. Synthesizers were used to add textures to the tunes, while the drums sounded metronome-perfect, almost as if a drum machine was supplying the patterns. Strangely, although Mirage was the trio's most experimental album, it also turned out to be one of their most psychedelia-based works. The groovy little ditty "Get on Down" turned out to be one of the band's first videos aired on MTV, while the title track, the melodic "Leaves," the country rocker "Confusion Fog," the unrelenting "Beauty," and the album-closing punk freak-out "Liquified" are all standouts. Several previously unreleased demos were included on the 1999 Rykodisc reissue, as well as a solo Curt Kirkwood original, "Grand Intro." ~~ Greg Prato

trACks:- Mirage - Quit It - Confusion Fog - The Wind And The Rain - The Mighty Zero - Get On Down - Leaves - I Am a Machine - Beauty - A Hundred Miles - Love Our Children Forever - Liquified - The Mighty Zero (Bonus) - I Am a Machine (Bonus) - Liquified (Bonus) - Rubberneckin' (Bonus) - Grand Intro (Bonus).

Ruts (1990) The Crack

The Crack is The Ruts first album, released in 1979 and containing the UK hit singles: "Babylon's Burning" (Number seven on the UK chart in June 1979) and "Something That I Said" (No. 29 in September 1979). The white-reggae "Jah War", which was written in the aftermath of the Southall unrest and the over-use of force by the Metropolitan Police Service's Special Patrol Group in 1979, was also released as a single but didn't make the UK chart.
The cover picture by artist John H Howard shows the members of the group (from left to right: Malcolm Owen, Paul Fox, Dave Ruffy and Segs - who is perusing a copy of Exchange & Mart) seated on a large sofa, around them are some of their contemporaries such as Rat Scabies and Captain Sensible of The Damned (top right corner), Jimmy Pursey of Sham 69 (bottom right), while Peter Cook and Dudley Moore are standing behind Malcolm, John Peel appears to be doing something to a schoolgirl (in uniform) with a bar of chocolate on the left hand side, Jimi Hendrix looks on from the right, the wives and girlfriends of the band members appear in various poses, as does the band's roadie Mannah (seen from the back) who assisted in writing the song "S.U.S" which deals with the vagrancy act, widely used by London's Metropolitan Police Service in the late 1970s. The astronomer Patrick Moore looks on somewhat disapprovingly from the left. The album sleeve contains a dedication to Jimmy O'Neal, one of the organizers of the Deeply Vale Free Festival, where the band had their beginnings.

Stiff Little Fingers (1989) Live in Sweden

With sandpaper-throated frontman Jake Burns leading the way, SLF did release an auspicious, if badly produced, debut album, Inflammable Material, that featured the band's two best songs, "Alternative Ulster" and "Suspect Device." Both were passionate, ferocious songs dealing with the harsh, deadly realities of growing up in the middle of two decades of Northern Ireland's violence. These songs thrust SLF into the limelight and got them loads of enthusiastic press, which led to a contract with the decidedly anti-punk Chrysalis label in 1980. After that, SLF released a handful of pretty good records (including a terrific live album, Hanx), but their unregenerate fast and loud punk style started to sound stale. In 1982, the band released their most non-punk record (Now Then...), which was greeted by general apathy. In a musical rut, dogged by the facile Clash comparisons, and with punk rock running out of steam, Burns pulled the plug on SLF.
Sadly, the band's breakup lasted only five years. After a string of forgettable solo singles and a stint as a BBC Radio producer, Burns, hoping to cash in on punk nostalgia, re-formed SLF (with another aging punk rocker, ex-Jam bassist Bruce Foxton) in 1987, and released a bunch of lousy (mostly live) records for the rest of the millennium. ~~ John Dougan

Stiff Little Fingers (1995) B's, Live, Unplugged And Demos

A taut, explosive Belfast-based punk band, Stiff Little Fingers (named after a Vibrators song) had the dubious distinction of being referred to as "The Irish Clash." What must have seemed like a compliment at the time did little to help their career, only because it made comparisons between the two bands inevitable.
Granted, there were many similarities: both bands debuted playing revved-up late-'70s punk rock, were politically inclined, featured pissed-off lead singers, had a love for reggae, and possessed a near-palpable sense of isolation and desperation. But as we all know, the Clash offered complexity, panache, and a consistently breathtaking body of work. Stiff Little Fingers, on the other hand, were simply a very good punk rock band.

The A-Bones (1991) The Life Of Riley (Link Updated!!)

The A-Bones is a garage rock band from Brooklyn, New York. Their name was derived from a song by The Trashmen. The band was formed in 1984 by vocalist Billy Miller and his wife, drummer and co-vocalist Miriam Linna, in the wake of a prior band collaboration, The Zantees. The couple were at the time editors of the rock and roll culture fanzine Kicks and on the threshold of launching Norton Records.[2] Guitarist Bruce Bennett replaced original guitarist Mike Mariconda shortly after the band was formed. Marcus "The Carcass" Natale replaced founding bass player Mike Lewis (a one time member of both the Lyres and Yo La Tengo), prior to recording the A-Bones second E.P. Free Beer For Life in 1988. Tenor sax player Lars Espensen further filled out the group from 1990 until 2010.

Stiff Little Fingers (2002) Live In Aberdeen (1979)

In 1979, Stiff Little Fingers recorded a number of live shows for their live disc Hanx (which was initially intended to get American fans up to speed on SLF's pre-Chrysalis body of song), and close to thirty years after the fact, one of the gigs committed to tape for the project gets a release of its own. While excerpts from this show appeared on a limited-edition picture disc called Broken Fingers in 1996, and the version of "Straw Dogs" recorded this night showed up on the B-side of the European 7" of "At the Edge," none of the performances on Live in Aberdeen (1979) made it on to Hanx, and it's hard to say why: Jake Burns delivers the songs with fierce passion and plenty of energy, the band sounds tight and powerful, and SLF's rapport with their Scottish fans is impressive. By the time this show was recorded, Stiff Little Fingers had started to grow beyond their initial status as scrappy kids from Belfast into a world-class punk rock powerhouse, and the recording is a bit more polished and the playing more nuanced than one might expect from a spin of Inflammable Material, but there's still admirably little fuss and clutter on display in this show, and Burns' between song patter (as he asks the punters not to fight, demands the same of the bouncers, explains a few of the tunes, and scoffs at his own pop star status) sounds like something straight out of a show at a corner pub. While Hanx is a non-stop barrage of early Stiff Little Fingers hits, Live in Aberdeen (1979) plays more like a typical live show, with occasional stops and starts and a fair bit of by-play with the audience, but it's all loud, powerful and engagingly fun, and captures a great band near the top of their game, especially when they tear into audience favorites like "No More of That," "Nobody's Hero," "Wasted Life" and "Alternative Ulster." Longtime fans will definitely want to hear this. ~~ Mark Deming

Johnny Thunders (1978) So Alone @VBR

Following the drug-fueled implosion of the Heartbreakers, Johnny Thunders bounced back with his first solo outing, So Alone. Featuring a veritable who's who of '70s punk and hard rock -- Chrissie Hynde, Phil Lynott, Peter Perrett, Steve Marriott, Paul Cook, and Steve Jones, among others -- the record was a testament to what the former New York Dolls guitarist could accomplish with a little focus. Much like Thunders' best work with the Dolls and Heartbreakers, So Alone is a gloriously sloppy amalgam of R&B, doo wop, and three-chord rock & roll. Despite the inevitable excesses that plagued every Thunders recording session, Steve Lillywhite's solid engineering job and a superb set of songs hold everything together. A cover of the Chantays' classic instrumental "Pipeline" leads things off, and is a teasing reminder of what a great guitarist Thunders could be when he put his mind to it. The record's indisputable masterpiece is "You Can't Put Your Arms Round a Memory," a wrenching, surprisingly literate ballad in which Thunders seems to acknowledge that his junkie lifestyle has doomed him to the abyss. Songs like "Leave Me Alone," "Hurtin'," and the chilling title track continue the theme of life inside the heroin balloon. Fortunately, all this back-alley gloom is leavened by some memorably animated moments. "London Boys" is a scathing reply to the Sex Pistols' indictment of the New York punk scene, "New York." The funky "Daddy Rolling Stone" features the inimitable Lynott on background vocals, while the rave-ups "Great Big Kiss" and "(She's So) Untouchable" are terrific examples of Thunders' raunchy take on classic R&B. Sadly, Johnny Thunders never followed up on the promise of his solo debut. His subsequent records were a frustrating mix of drug-addled mediocrity and downright laziness. But for one brief moment, he seemed to put it all together. That moment is So Alone. ~~ Andy Claps

Jingo De Lunch (1994) Deja Voodoo @VBR

A German band that brought together five experienced punk rockers from a handful of bands (Tom Schwoll of Zerstörte Jugend, Sepp Ehrensberger of Vorkriegsjugend, Steve Hahn of Kult-Huren, Henning Menke of various bands, and Canadian Yvonne Ducksworth of Combat Not Conform and Manson Youth), Jingo De Lunch formed in 1987 in Kreuzberg. Within a year of convening, they released their first album, Perpetuum Mobile and proceeded to record five more albums -- not to mention opening up for some of the genre's giants -- Ramones, Bad Brains -- before calling it a day in 1996. Johnny Thunders (1984) Hurt Me @VBR

Hurt Me is a rarity in Johnny Thunders' catalog -- a collection of acoustic recordings revealing that he could be a hell of a performer if he so chose. Lärm & Stanx (1984) Campaign For Musical Destruction & No Secrets (SPlit LP)

Lärm was a fast-core/straight edge band from Netherlands, that had something for everybody: sincere leftist politics, a strong straight edge philosophy, a lighthearted, humorous attitude, and most importantly devastating music played at never-before-heard speeds. They played "extreme noise" style: short, fast, and out of tune. Stax is a punk hardcore band from Netherlands.

Meat Puppets (2000) Golden Lies @VBR

With all the turmoil and tragedy surrounding his family, it's no wonder Meat Puppets leader Curt Kirkwood fled Arizona to make a fresh start in Austin, TX. Breaking with the past, Kirkwood assembled a new quartet version of the Meat Puppets, featuring two former members of the Austin band Pariah. As presented on Golden Lies, the new Puppets are a surprisingly heavy, hard-rocking outfit, turning in one of the loudest records in the group's catalog. It's also one of the best-produced, boasting a thick, full, shiny sound. Some of the quirkier, more freewheeling edges of the old Puppets have been sanded off -- there's very little of Kirkwood's vaunted country influence here, and the record sometimes feels a little too uniform when the inevitable comparisons to the Pups of yesteryear are made. But really, many individual moments work very well, and it's encouraging to hear Kirkwood returning to form. Songs like "I Quit," "You Love Me," and "Endless Wave" have that classic airy Pups feel, but with an added jolt of intensity supplied by the new band. Not everything on the record works; some of the lyrics try a little too hard for the trippy surrealism that's become Kirkwood's hallmark, and a few songs feature a sort of half-rapped speak-sing that comes off as awkward. Golden Lies doesn't quite recapture the glory of the Puppets' SST years, or the pop breakthrough of Too High to Die, but its very existence is a triumphant achievement. ~~ Steve Huey

Meat Puppets (1991) Forbidden Places @VBR

Veteran independent rockers the Meat Puppets finally took the plunge and signed with a major label in the early '90s, London Records, the first home of one of their favorite bands, ZZ Top. Judging from their previous release (1989's Monsters), it appeared as though the trio was going in a more experimental direction, away from the raw and direct approach of their early works. But the Puppets surprised their fans by going back to their live-in-the-room feel, resulting in one of their finest albums, 1991's Forbidden Places. Unfortunately, it became yet another criminally overlooked release for the band, getting lost in the shuffle since it was released just prior to the Seattle explosion in the fall of 1991. The turbo-charged album opener, "Sam," is a razor-sharp rocker that features a humorous, lightning-fast vocal delivery from the Kirkwood brothers; other standouts include the bluesy "Nail It Down," the tranquil "This Day" and "No Longer Gone," and such ragers as "Open Wide," "Popskull," and the title track. And what Meat Puppets album would be complete without a few country ditties? The lonesome "That's How It Goes" and the breakneck album-closing instrumental "Six Gallon Pie" showed off the trio's cowboy roots splendidly. ~~ Greg Prato

Johnny Thunders (1983) In Cold Blood @VBR

Johnny Thunders (1985) Que Sera, Sera @VBR

Fame and promise come easy to some; others handle it about as well as Bill Buckner fielding a ground ball. Rock & roll is littered with the names of artists who've squandered their musical gifts, and few names are as infamous in this regard as Johnny Thunders. In 1978 the former New York Doll recorded his solo debut and one of the better albums of the punk era, So Alone. Reviews were favorable, and the future looked decent for the guitarist and full-time junkie. But, in a move that would come to define his solo career, rather than building on the success of So Alone, Thunders stumbled deeper into heroin addiction, spending the next seven years playing gig after gig and shooting most of the proceeds into his arm. By 1985, despite reuniting with the Heartbreakers for a legendary show at the London Lyceum, he had been written off by everyone but his most steadfast supporters -- and even they had to be shaking their heads at his relentless bid for oblivion. It was under these circumstances that Thunders and his band of the moment, the Black Cats (bassist Keith Yon and drummer Tony St. Helene), weaved into West 3 Studios in London to lay down tracks for his second solo album, Que Sera, Sera. Despite being plagued by a litany of chemically induced fits and starts, the album came together well. While not the end-to-end triumph of So Alone, Que Sera, Sera nonetheless had enough spark to convince those still listening that the weathered Doll wasn't about to go quietly into that good night. Bolstered by a revolving door of punk cronies -- including Patti Palladin, Glen Matlock, Stiv Bators, and Only Ones guitarist John Perry -- Thunders and band kick some New Yawk sneer into songs like the punk mission statement "Short Lives," "Little Bit of Whore," "Blame It on Mom," "Endless Party," and "Billy Boy," a searing instrumental ode to fallen original Dolls drummer Billy Murcia. The standout tracks, though, are "I Only Wrote This Song for You," with its delicately strummed chords and funereal piano figure, and a hilarious demolition of the Doris Day standard "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be Will Be)." Replete with accordion and choral support by London's St. Theresa School Choir, the song suggests a drunken 3 a.m. singalong down the streets of Little Italy. Though not included on the original LP, "Que Sera, Sera" has been added here as a bonus track. Like most Johnny Thunders albums, there are a few snags: the interminable "Cool Operator" is a failed reggae experiment redeemed only by the classic Johnny-ism "I can get Godzilla to give me head"; the bonus remixes of "Short Lives" and "Cool Operator" are completely extraneous; and the production, while clean and crisp, is a little antiseptic, robbing the music of the anarchic raunch that made Thunders' live shows so much fun. That said, though, Que Sera, Sera is a surprisingly solid effort, featuring tight playing and well-constructed melodies. With a little record-company backing and a fortuitous fall of the chips, it could've marked a new chapter in Thunders' career. Sadly, it stands as one of the last coherent gasps by a perennial contender. ~~ Andy Claps

Stiv Bators (1983) The Lord And The New Creatures @VBR

As the frontman for the Dead Boys, Stiv Bators terrorized audiences with his snotty, in-your-face punk rock style. But after the Dead Boys, Bators embarked on a musical journey that saw him touch upon new wave (the Wanderers), goth rock (the Lords of the New Church), and power pop (during a brief solo career), as well as a fling with movie acting. Born Steve Bator on October 22, 1949, in Youngstown, OH, Bators took a liking to garage rock and proto-punk early on -- a story he liked to tell is that it was he who handed Iggy Pop the jar of peanut butter that he smeared across his chest and threw around while walking on the audience during the Stooges' televised infamous 1970 rock festival in Ohio (additionally, Bators befriended the Ramones during the quartet's first Ohio performance). As a result of his interest in the burgeoning punk movement, Bators hooked up with friend/guitarist Cheetah Chrome and others to form the short-lived local outfit Frankenstein. Sensing that there was little chance of launching a successful music career in Ohio, Bators convinced a handful of fellow local musicians (Chrome, guitarist Jimmy Zero, and drummer Johnny Blitz) to relocate to New York City in 1976, resulting in the formation of the Dead Boys.
